History
In 1997 Brunton started using the traditional EDI and expected this become very widespread and popular in the course of time.
However, as time passed this did not come true, because many
companies have been reluctant to invest in electronic data
exchange. One of the reasons might have been that this has
been very cost consuming. New technologies and especially the
popularity of the Internet have extended the possibilities but
also reduced the expenses.
 
Electronic data exchange – Brunton's vision
Today more than 50% of all transactions, which would normally
demand a manual handling, are carried out electronically at the
Brunton purchasing department.
Within a time span of 2 to 3 years Brunton wants to carry out an
electronic data exchange with all important suppliers with whom
we trade on a regular basis.
 
The advantages in connection with electronic data exchange are
among others,
- to minimize typing errors
- faster registration
- reduction of costs in connection with paper handling and postage
- automation of manual typing and control and thus reduced staff 
  costs
 
Brunton offers several solutions
At present Brunton offers the following solutions,
- WebEDI
- WebConfirm
- EDI (Electronic Document Interchange)
 
WebEDI is the latest Brunton solution and we expect much from this
in the future. The solution is based on free document standards
built on the XML standard. The data exchange is made through
the Internet. At present we are able to handle purchasing orders, order confirmations and invoices with this solution.
 
WebConfirm is a solution where it is possible, through a browser
and a login on the Brunton website, to confirm orders, including changing
previously confirmed deadlines and amounts. WebConfirm only
demands a web access at the supplier's, and for most suppliers the
starting-up is thus “free”. However, this solution demands a certain
amount of manual work at the supplier's as the typing on the
Brunton website is made manually.
 
EDI is the traditional solution based on fixed exchange standards
through VANS (Value Added Networks Services). A traditional EDI
solution is especially interesting for suppliers who have already
invested in EDI. Suppliers who have not yet started on electronic
data exchange are recommended to use the internet solution
(WebEDI). The EDI solution is able to handle purchasing orders, order confirmations, invoices and forecasts.
